The History
It has as its origin a hermitage dedicated to Saint Joseph, founded in 1608 by the hermit Egas Munis. It was near the beach, facing the Rua da Misericórdia, and was donated by its founder to the devotees of São José.
Between 1659 and 1734, it was the headquarters of Rio de Janeiro, during which time it underwent several reconstructions.
Sacked in 1711 by the troops of the French Duguay-Trouin, during the invasion of the city, lost pieces of great historical and artistic value, as well as all its documentation.
In 1751, receives the denomination of Matrix of the Parish of São José.
As it was in a bad state of conservation, the Brotherhood of St. Joseph decides to rebuild it. The construction began in 1807 and was started by the sacristy (backwards). When it was completed, itreceived the images that were in the old church (December 24, 1815).
Once the old part was demolished, the construction of the church body began,
It was benzened on April 10, 1842; On the 17th the images were transferred, and the following Sunday there was the first feast of Saint Joseph.

Use the Subway! Get off at the "Carioca" station. In it, you should look for exit A, which will leave you in front of "Rio Branco" avenue.
Arriving at "Rio Branco" avenue, looking at its left diagonal, you will see two streets: Av. Nilo Peçanha (larger and easier to see), and "São José" street, which passes on the left side of "Mário Lago" square.
