The History
Built to replace the hermida that existed in that place (dedicated to Our Lady of "Ó", which crumbled), it had its fundamental stone launched in 1761, being inaugurated in 1770. It passed through several reforms, in order to adapt to the new functions that it received over the years. The current composition is from 1910.
In 1808, with the arrival of the Portuguese Royal Family in Brazil, it was elevated to the status of Royal Chapel and, soon after, it accumulated the function of Cathedral (until 1976, when the Cathedral of São Sebastião in Rio de Janeiro was completed).

A ermida desabou em um dia de festa soterrando os fiéis.

O primeiro andar da fachada, com três portais em estilo pombalino lisboeta, é ainda original da igreja de 1770.

Erguido ao lado da igreja, em 1619, o Convento do Carmo foi durante muitos anos a maior edificação do Rio de Janeiro. Era unido a igreja por uma torre com portaria.

A igreja guarda, em uma urna, parte das cinzas de Pedro Alvares Cabral.

Aqui foram realizadas as coroações de D Pedro I (1/12/1822) e D. Pedro II (18/07/1841).

Nela se encontra o mais velho sino do Rio de Janeiro. Construído por um artista anônimo francês, em 1623, possui a figura de um cavaheiro em reverência, com um chapeu de plumas a mão. Em torno do seu bojo esta escrito em latim "Aerat tum tibi libatopus voxl".

Para evitar a construção de edificações que viessem a prejudicar seu convento e a igreja, os frades carmelitas pediram a Câmara, e conseguiram, o aforamento das terras que ficavam a sua frente (terreno hoje conhecido como Praça XV).

Nela foi realizada a sagração do 1º Cardeal do Brasil e da América Latina, o Cardeal D. Joaquim Arcoverde de Albuquerque Cavalcanti (1905).

Use the subway! Get off at "Carioca" station and look for "A - Rio Branco" exit, which will leave you facing Avenida Rio Branco. Walk to it.
Getting there, walk to your left, following the counterflow, until the third junction, which will be the "Rio Branco" avenue and "Sete de Setembro" street. On the way you will cross "Nilo Peçanha" Avenue and "Assembléia" Street.
At the junction with "Sete de Setembro" street, cross to the other side of the "Rio Branco" avenue, following the trails of the VLT, heading towards "Plaça XV",.
You will pass by "Rodrigo Silva" street, "Travessa do Ouvidor", "da Quitanda" street and "do Carmo" street.After the last crossing you will be able to see the church beside you, in your right side.
Continue to walk until "Primeiro de Março" street to see the front of it and the main entrance.
